Names of high school students go to military unless parents opt out
They must act by Saturday to prevent information from being provided

By DEBORAH BACH
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

Names, phone numbers and other information about Seattle high school students must be provided to the Defense Department on request -- unless parents opt out in writing by Saturday.

NO CHILD LEFT UN-RECRUITED
high schools are required - ironically, by the No Child Left Behind Act - to provide military recruiters with student home phone numbers and addresses. The law also mandates that schools notify parents of the option to remove student names from these recruiter lists.

Harper's Magazine: How the Neocon Agenda Lost Iraq
by Robert Fresch
Tue Sep 28th, 2004 at 03:15:18 GMT

Please forgive this extensive post (by a newbie, no less), but this article, Baghdad Year Zero: Pillaging Iraq in Pursuit of a Neocon Utopia, by Naomi Klein in this month's Harper's Magazine is simply exceptional. It answers so many question about the Bush administration's approach to Iraq that I felt compelled to risk admonishment by Kos et al. I've tried to edit down to a dozen cogent excerpts, but you really owe it to yourself to read the entire piece and spread the word among your undecided friends and co-workers.
We must make clear to the Germans that the wrong for which their fallen leaders are on trial is not that they lost the war, but that they started it. And we must not allow ourselves to be drawn into a trial of the causes of the war, for our position is that no grievances or policies will justify resort to aggressive war. It is utterly renounced and condemned as an instrument of policy.

PEACE ACTION ESSAY CONTEST WINNERS 2004:

Emily from Mrs. Hodges' class at Maplewood K8 wrote

Making the right decision is rather difficult without knowing anything about the decision you're making. This is a good reason to research the candidates or possibilities, and find out as much as you can about them. (Read the whole essay)

Rafaela from Karen Elliot's class writes

President Wanted

Reilly

Besides being the Commander in Chief, the president of the United States has many other important responsibilities. (Read the whole essay)
